PAT  and Current Legislation and Compliance

New Regulations

New regulations in NSW means all employers and premises controllers (i.e. building owners, property managers etc) must ensure power points in their workplaces are protected by RCDs (Safety Switches or Residual Current Devices). RCD's dramatically reduce the likelihood of electrocution.

On 1 January 2013, the requirements for Residual Current Devices (RCDs) changed in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 (NSW).

Retrofitting  RCD's into workplaces where ‘plug in’ electrical equipment applies to:
  • Electrical equipment exposed to operating conditions likely to result in damage to the equipment (or a reduction in its expected life span) including conditions involving exposure to moisture, heat, vibration, mechanical damage, corrosive chemicals or dust.
  • Electrical equipment moved between different locations in circumstances where damage to the equipment or to a flexible electricity supply cord is reasonably likely.
  • Electrical equipment frequently moved during its normal use.
  • Electrical equipment forming part of, or is used with, an amusement device.

Can I fit RCD's into my existing switchboard or must I ugrade?
Manufacturers supply a combined RCD and Circuit Breaker, in a single device known as an RCBO or an RCD/MCB.

How do I maintain an RCD?

InfraScan Thermal Imaging provides ongoing RCD inspection and testing required by the regulations keeping your to compliance with the OH&S regulation up to date.
